Muay Thai Historical Controversies & Debates Surrounding the Art.

Updated: Apr 9, 2023

While Muay Thai has a long and storied history, it is not without its controversies and debates. In this article, we will explore some of the most notable controversies surrounding the art of Muay Thai throughout its history.

One of the most controversial aspects of Muay Thai is the use of traditional rituals before fights. Before a fight, Muay Thai fighters perform a dance called the Wai Khru Ram Muay. This dance is a traditional ritual that is meant to pay respect to the fighter's teacher, as well as the spirits and gods of Muay Thai. Some people view this ritual as a way of connecting with the spiritual roots of the art, while others view it as superstitious and unnecessary.

Another controversial aspect of Muay Thai is the use of traditional equipment. Traditional Muay Thai equipment includes a headband called a Mongkol and arm bands called Pra Jiad. These items are said to bring good luck and protection to the fighter. However, some people argue that these items provide an unfair advantage and should not be allowed in modern competition.

Another controversial issue in Muay Thai is the use of certain techniques in competition. One of the most controversial techniques is the use of elbows. Elbows are considered one of the most devastating techniques in Muay Thai, and their use in competition has led to some serious injuries. Some people argue that elbows should be banned from competition to protect the fighters, while others argue that they are an integral part of the art and should be allowed.

Parinya Kietbusaba, a former training partner of the writer, was responsible for the biggest ever crowd at Lumpnee Satdium in 1998 fighting as a Transsexual against a male opponent. Her story is documented in the classy film "Beautiful boxer."

Another issue in Muay Thai is the role of women in the sport. While Muay Thai is open to both men and women, there has been some controversy over the years about the role of women in the sport. Some people argue that women should not be allowed to compete in Muay Thai because it is too dangerous, while others argue that women should be allowed to compete on an equal footing with men.

Finally, there is also some debate over the role of modern technology in Muay Thai. While traditional Muay Thai training focused on developing strength and technique through repetitive drills and sparring, modern training methods often rely on technology to enhance performance. Some people argue that this takes away from the purity of the art, while others argue that it is necessary to stay competitive in a modern world.

In conclusion, Muay Thai is a complex and nuanced art that has been the subject of many controversies and debates throughout its history. From traditional rituals and equipment to the use of certain techniques in competition, there are many different opinions about what is appropriate and what is not. However, despite these controversies, Muay Thai continues to be a popular and respected martial art around the world. As the sport continues to evolve, it will undoubtedly continue to be the subject of new controversies and debates, but it will always remain an important part of Thai culture and history.
