The Muay Thai Education Visa, commonly known as the ED visa, is designed for students enrolled in recognized educational institutions, including Muay Thai gyms. This visa allows you to stay in Thailand for an extended period, typically up to one year, with the possibility of renewal. Here are some key aspects of the Muay Thai Education Visa:
Extended Stay: The ED visa permits you to stay in Thailand for up to one year, with extensions available if you continue your training.
Regular Training: To qualify, you must be enrolled in a Muay Thai gym that meets the educational criteria set by the Thai Ministry of Education. Regular attendance and training are required. There are only a handful of gyms in Chiang Mai that qualify as Schools so your choice of gym is very limited.
Once you sign up to a school you have to continue to train there even if you don't like it.
Cost: Muay Thai visas are quite expensive. 80,000 baht a year plus 6000 Baht for your 3 month report to Immigration is normal in Chiang Mai. There are often disguised costs also, Once you have paid the 80k you are a hostage and have choice but to pay any added on fees.
Reporting Requirements: Visa holders must report their address to the Thai Immigration Office every 90 days.
Restricted options to travel in country or home visit as travel is frowned upon by immigration, who expect you to be studying regularly.
Muay Thai Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)
The Muay Thai Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is a newer option tailored specifically for long-term tourists who want to immerse themselves in Muay Thai training. This visa offers several unique advantages over the traditional Education Visa:
Long Duration: The DTV provides a five-year visa with multiple entries. Upon arrival, you get an initial 180-day stay, which can be extended for another 180 days for a fee of 1,900 Baht. After 360 days, you must leave Thailand but can re-enter on the same day to reset the 180-day stay period. You can do this for up to 5 years from your entry date without further visa fee,
Simplified Process: Obtaining a DTV is generally more straightforward than the ED visa, with fewer bureaucratic hurdles and a more streamlined application process.
Flexibility: Unlike the ED visa, which requires enrollment in an educational institution, the DTV provides more flexibility in terms of your training schedule and choice of gym. You can choose any Muay Thai gym registered by the Sports Authority of Thailand. Training is not monitored and you are not tested on your progress.
If you don't like the gym you are not obliged to keep training there and simply go to another gym.
Economic Efficiency: The DTV has a one-time fee of 10,000 Baht for five years. While you need to show proof of 500,000 Baht in funds when applying, this amount does not need to be maintained in the account before or after application, you do not have to demonstrate funds again during the 5 year period. Funds can be in a foreign bank account.
Minimal Reporting Requirements: The DTV does not require the 90-day reporting to immigration, reducing administrative hassle.
Multiple Entry: You can leave as often as you like and for as long as you like, within the 5 year time frame. You can travel around Thailand freely.
