The Best Places to Apply for Your Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)Muay Thai / Soft Power Option

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) has revolutionized long-term stays in Thailand and stands out as the most accessible visa option in Southeast Asia. Among the various categories, the Muay Thai soft power activity option is by far the easiest to pursue. At Muay Thai Fever, we’ve assisted with around 120 DTV applications, boasting a 100% success rate on our Muay Thai paperwork. Only once have we been requested for additional documents, and while three applicants were initially rejected due to financial statement issues, they reapplied and were ultimately successful. However, it’s essential to remember that this visa requires applicants to apply from outside Thailand.

Applying from Your Home Passport Country

While we are not visa agents and specialize only in the Muay Thai documentation aspect, we’ve gained considerable insights from our clients’ experiences. In our opinion, the best place to apply for a DTV is your home passport country. Applying from your country of citizenship makes logical sense to embassies, and applicants rarely encounter requests for additional documents when following this route. The only downside is that processing times may take longer, sometimes extending up to a month, depending on the country.

Applying from Neighboring Countries in Southeast Asia

For those already living in Thailand, applying for a DTV from a neighboring country is often more convenient. Here’s our feedback on various Southeast Asian countries:

  1. Myanmar We’ve handled only a few applications from Myanmar, all for Myanmar citizens, and these were successful without any complications. However, our experience here is limited.

  2. Laos Laos is a decent option, with Vientiane being more straightforward than Savannakhet. Applicants report that Laotian embassies are strict about bank statements, requiring at least three months’ worth and asking for explanations or evidence for certain transactions.

  3. Vietnam Vietnam is one of the most reliable destinations for DTV applications. We’ve processed about 40 applications from both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, all of which were approved without issues. Vietnam should be a top consideration.

  4. Cambodia Phnom Penh was initially problematic, especially during the early days of the DTV program, when embassy staff were unfamiliar with the process. However, recent feedback suggests improvement. Myanmar citizens, in particular, seem to favor Phnom Penh.

  5. Malaysia Kuala Lumpur’s embassy is notoriously challenging, known for unreasonable document requests. We advise against applying there.

  6. Singapore Singapore has earned a reputation as the most difficult embassy to deal with for DTV applications. We even suggested that a Singaporean passport holder apply in Indonesia instead. Avoid Singapore unless you’re ready for excessive bureaucracy.

  7. Indonesia Jakarta is a highly efficient and hassle-free choice for obtaining a DTV. With over 30 successful applications handled here, including cases where one month’s bank statements sufficed, Jakarta is on par with Vietnam as an excellent option.

  8. Taiwan Taiwan was a popular choice due to its walk-in policies until recently. While Muay Thai documents have not been an issue, Taiwanese embassies scrutinize bank statements, often requesting additional explanations for highlighted transactions.

  9. Philippines We’ve had no direct experience with Manila but have received reports that it’s reasonably straightforward to deal with.

  10. Hong Kong Hong Kong’s embassy is the only one to request proof of six months of prior Muay Thai experience. While this requirement is illogical given that the DTV is designed for beginners, our applicant’s year of training allowed us to meet this demand. However, the applicant faced numerous additional document requests, making Hong Kong a location to avoid.

Conclusion

The DTV is a fantastic opportunity for long-term stays in Thailand, especially for those exploring Muay Thai. While applying from your home country is the most reliable option, neighboring Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam and Indonesia also provide smooth application experiences. Avoid embassies in Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong, as they tend to complicate the process unnecessarily. With proper preparation and the right destination, securing a DTV can be a straightforward process. If you’re considering Muay Thai as your soft power activity, Muay Thai Fever is here to ensure all your documents are impeccable.
